[A monocotyledon of the Yam family]. A robust plant with glabrous, green, twining annual stems 2-4 m. long, growing from a deep-seated, large, ovoid, blackish tuber.

Fleurs : vert-jaunâtre, en grappes grêles et lâches, allongées et multiflores dans les pieds mâles, courtes et pauciflores dans les femelles ;

Flowers: Male flowers 5 mm diam., in clusters on long, axillary peduncles; bracts minute; perianth campanulate, yellow-green, segments recurved, lanceolate, joined at base; female flower 4 mm diam., sub-sessile in short, axillary racemes with abortive stamens; segments lanceolate, ascending, then recurved; stigmas recurved.
